Estuarine modeling

This PhD study by Arame Dieye is part of the international MALMON DeSIRA project « Mangrove, mangrove rice: sustainably improving rice production, mangrove ecosystems and people’s livelihoods in Guinea Bissau » funded by the European Commission. Rice is the staple food of people living in mangrove areas in Guinea Bissau. It is the main cereal consumed in this country. However, the rice fields are strongly threatened by the rise in sea level and are increasingly exposed to flooding due to sudden and strong variations in sea level. These marine submersions lead to the salinization of the land and water and progressively make them unfit for agriculture. They also cause the reduction of arable land and accentuate the decline in agricultural yields and poverty in general. Thus, the objective of this thesis is to advance our knowledge of sea level variations to identify the coastal areas likely to be submerged and finally to conceive an early warning system of storms and tides to reinforce the resilience of the populations facing the environmental risks related to sea level variations in Guinea Bissau.
