I’m a physical oceanographer, expert in ocean equatorial dynamics and climate variability in the Tropical Pacific. My current research interests are on oceanic circulation variability in the Tropical Pacific, on low-latitude western boundary currents, and on the equatorial current system dynamics. I’m mainly working with various observations, including satellite and in situ data.

Alexandre Ganachaud

Directeur de recherche à l’IRD et au LEGOS, j’ai rejoint Mercator Océan International depuis le 1^er janvier 2021 à l’issue d’un mandat de 5 ans à la direction du LEGOS. Jusqu’à maintenant, mes recherches ont porté essentiellement sur l’océanographie physique en relation avec les changements climatiques – et leurs impacts sur les pêches et les îles, en Océanie. A partir de campagnes en mer et de mouillages grand fond, j’ai contribué à l’étude des courants de bord ouest du Pacifique Sud. Je développe maintenant des projets transdisciplinaires liant les objectifs de développement durable des Nations Unies, les observations océaniques et les « acteurs » que sont les gouvernements, les collectivités, les entreprises et les organisations locales afin de poser les bases d’actions durables. Je travaille également à la définition d’indicateurs océaniques pertinents aux acteurs du Pacifique et les possibilités de services appropriés.

I’m a professor at the University of Toulouse. Most of my teaching is in ocean wave dynamics and geophysical fluid dynamics.  You can watch my lectures on my YouTube channel here. 

My research is in large scale atmosphere-ocean dynamics, with a focus on atmospheric teleconnections, tropical-extratropical interactions  and the atmospheric response to sea surface temperature anomalies. I have also worked on atmospheric waves and stability and I’m  currently interested in coupling condensation heating with the tropical circulation.  Much of my research is carried out with a dynamical model of intermediate complexity with forcing derived from data.  It is called DREAM – web site here.

Je suis dans l’altimétrie et la mésoéchelle océanique depuis 1989. Un début de carrière à batir des outils d’estimation à CLS. En 2004 recruté au LEGOS pour rejoindre officiellement l’aventure Mercator. Impliqué dans PIRATA, aujourd’hui à étudier l’Atlantique Tropical au Brésil en préparant SWOT.

Serena Illig

I am an IRD researcher at the Laboratoire d’Etudes en Géophysique et Océanographie Spatiale (LEGOS UMR – IRD, CNRS, CNES & Université Paul Sabatier) in Toulouse (France). I am presently working in the Oceanographic department at University of Cape Town (UCT).

My research focuses on the phenology of the Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS) of the southern hemisphere, along the coasts of Peru and Chile in the Humboldt Current System, and along the coasts of Angola and Namibia in the northern Benguela Upwelling System. I am specialized on the connexion with the linear equatorial dynamics, and on the air-sea interactions at regional and basin scales.

I am broadly interested in the general ocean circulation, at various scales, and its impact on the climate system. During my PhD, I have worked on understanding the formation processes of the deep currents at low latitudes, called jets and their impact on the distribution of water masses. I have used many different tools from in-situ observations to idealized numerical simulations and theory.
