SURVeillance de l'Océan AuSTRAL or "Monitoring the Southern Ocean"

Australian and French climate scientists have been conducting an important ocean observing program between Hobart and the French Antarctic base at Dumont D’Urville since 1992.
The SURVOSTRAL program provides them with temperature and salinity information in the upper ocean, data that is valuable for monitoring climate variations and validating computer simulations and projections for the Southern Ocean, the engine room of global climate.
In addition, the program is contributing to a global research initiative which will eventually provide ocean forecasts for marine users.

The SURVOSTRAL Programme is a joint French-Australian-United States research initiative, generating one of the longest continuous records yet of Southern Ocean behaviour.
