The PIRATA program is coordinated and guided by the PIRATA Scientific Steering Group (SSG), which includes three to four members from each partner country, along with a German representative from GEOMAR since 2006. The SSG oversees the implementation of the program and its scientific activities, meeting annually alongside the PIRATA Review Board (PRB) to provide detailed reports on the program’s performance. Beyond oversight, the SSG evaluates proposals from the scientific community for network enhancements, such as the addition of sensors, new moorings, or the use of PIRATA infrastructures and annual cruises for complementary operations. After a thorough scientific assessment, the SSG forwards approved proposals to the PRB for final consideration. This structured governance highlights PIRATA’s strong international collaboration, ensuring that contributions from multiple countries are integrated effectively for the advancement of tropical Atlantic observations.
