Mesoscale eddy in the tropical Atlantic Ocean
21 juin 2022 @ 11h00 - 12h30
– Micael Aguedjou, Jeune Docteur, CIPMA, Cotonou, LEGOS, Toulouse –
Résumé :
Mesoscale eddies play a major role in ocean dynamics mainly in the transport of energy, heat, salt and other tracers (nutrients), including the redistribution of water masses trapped in these
vortices. In the tropical Atlantic Ocean, contrary to other oceanic regions, the properties of mesoscale eddies, their formation mechanism, as well as their potential impact on the basin scale
remain poorly understood. During my thesis work, we have been interested in this mesoscale dynamics in the tropical Atlantic Ocean (TAO), and the physical processes that characterize it from
in situ and satellite data. During the seminar, I will present a qualitative analysis of i) the mechanisms underlying the formation of mesoscale eddies in the TAO, and ii) their impact on heat
and water fluxes at the air-sea interface. We will first discuss the isopycnal temperature/salinity anomalies of the eddies and by qualitative deduction using the conservation equation of potential
vorticity, the mechanisms behind their formation (Aguedjou et al., 2021). In a second step, we will discuss the influence of eddies on turbulent flows and precipitation in the TAO (Aguedjou, 2022)
