Résumé :

In this talk I will give a short overview about aspects of spurious mixing recently investigated by our group. Based on an analytically derived relation between mixing in terms of tracer variance decay and diatracer volume fluxes, I will demonstrate the existence of spurious overturning circulation in numerical ocean models. By means of this extended Water Mass Transformation framework I will also clarify the instantaneous transformation between seawater and freshwater across virtual isohalines at the ocean surface as a consequence of the continuum equations for seawater. Finally, I would like to discuss alternative methods to diagnose local tracer variance decay in ocean models.
