Bias development and impact in global coupled models

15 janvier 2020 @ 11h00 - 12h00

– Chloé Prodhomme – Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Spain –

Abstract: Global coupled climate models are widely used to project and predict future climate. However, these models are not perfect; model systematic errors or biases appear due to approximations in the equations and misrepresentation of different parametrized processes. Biases affect all timescales: climatology, seasonal cycle evolution, and interannual variability. Processes responsible of biases formation and relationship between local and remote biases are still unclear.  In addition, interaction between biases at different timescale have been poorly explored. It is commonly thought that mean state biases (and drift in the context of prediction) prevents from simulating and predicting properly climate variability. In this seminar, we aim at giving insights on bias formation and impact in coupled models using both pre-industrial control run and seasonal hindcasts.
