Atmosphere

The atmosphere links many of the interests pursued at LEGOS. The scientific questions we study are conditioned by the dynamics and physics of the atmosphere  in a number of ways. 

  • Forcing and coupling:

Wind stress forces and couples with surface currents and surface waves, driving to the large scale circulation and contributing to its variability at a variety of scales, from river estuaries and upwelling zones to global sea level changes. Surface fluxes and radiative transfer are important for ocean mixing, biogeochemical cycles and climate studies. 

  • The hydrological cycle:

The transport of water in the atmosphere provides the fundamental link between marine science and continental hydrology, and is also a determining factor for ocean salinity. The continental water budget is driven by large scale flow, and by the displacement of rain-bearing convective systems, monitored by satellite. 

  • Atmospheric dynamics: 

The convective and dynamical response of the atmosphere to changing sea surface temperatures is an essential element of climate variability on a range of time scales.
